The next morning, Taliya sat once more in her desk, waiting for the boredom. Gal spent five minutes looking for chalk. Too late; the boredom had arrived.
Yarden, however, had not arrived. Taliya used the opportunity to erase the pencil line she had drawn, and drew it once more a few centimeters closer to Yarden’s side of the desk.
When at last Yarden collapsed huffing and puffing into his desk and immediately began wiping his nose, Taliya waited for him to notice that his parcel of desktop seemed to have shrunk. But he never noticed.
Gal began teaching and Taliya did her best to follow along in her textbook. But, just as before, the material was quite familiar. Taliya had already read it.
After lunch, Taliya devised a plan.
She placed all of her textbooks in her backpack, put it on, and walked calmly to the pencil sharpener. The pencil sharpener was mounted on the wall next to the classroom door. The door stood open.
Taliya proceeded to sharpen her pencil.
When Gal turned to the blackboard and her eyes were averted, Taliya took her pencil and slipped through the door quickly and quietly.
Soon, she was across the street and inside the bakery market, perusing the delicious inventory. Taliya selected a small piece of candy wrapped in pretty red cellophane. She asked the kind-looking man reading a newspaper behind the counter if he would put the candy on her tab.
The man smiled and agreed.
Taliya thanked him. She then grabbed two more pieces of candy, one for each of her brothers, and asked the man if that were alright.
The man smiled and agreed once more.
Outside, Taliya waited until school let out. She soon found Yair and together they headed for home, enjoying their candy.
Once they were nearing the building on Strauss Street, they encountered Nimrod, the bully boy, walking toward them.
When Nimrod saw them, he crossed the street and continued on his way, walking on the opposite sidewalk.
