Parker approached the Battle-suit. He reached up, placed one hand upon its abdomen. The metal was cool and smooth.
An echo of Regina Black’s voice reverberated in his mind:
“Put on the armor of God. . . . For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness . . . against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
He’d heard the words one night at Bubba’s, when Regina hosted her prayer group after their church was firebombed the first time. Parker had stood quiet and alone in the hallway on his way to the restroom, and listened while Regina read from her heavy black Bible, its pages edged with gold. Parker had never read the Bible. But so disturbing were Regina’s words that they seared themselves into Parker’s mind such that he never forgot them. It seemed odd he should recall them now.
Put on the armor of God. . . . For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness. . . .
Parker stood with his hand upon the cool armor of the Battle-suit and looked up at it, glowing in the light. He could feel a gentle warmth on his face from the white light above, illuminating one small section of the dark hangar.
Perhaps there were greater forces at work beyond merely stopping Dr. Red and recovering Go-Boy Ultra, beyond even finding his dad. His mom had always said everything happens for a reason. He’d been brought to Candyland against his will, quite literally in fact, having been kidnapped. Virtually everything he’d been asked to do had been against his will. Yet he’d done it.
And no one seemed to give a damn.
Perhaps making a quiet exit was the right thing to do.
He was confident he could make it out of the hangar and away from Candyland. General Ramsey didn’t have the firepower to stop him or to catch him once he’d gotten away. The video they’d all watched had proved that. Whether the General would actually give the order to have him killed was difficult to say.
If he did escape, he could go anyplace, fly anywhere. Go find his dad. He would be invisible everywhere he went. The suit would protect him.
Everywhere he went, the suit would protect him. The ultimate protection. The armor of God. . . .
He climbed the steps of the yellow service platform, up to the cockpit.
He reached for the cockpit access button.
