Parker’s ears filled with a deep, excruciating buzzing. His body jerked in a great spasm.
He sat up suddenly.
He was still in bed, in the dark. The alarm clock buzzed at him. He reached out and silenced it.
It was the dream again.
He breathed deeply in the darkness, surrounded by dim red light. “It was just a dream,” he said aloud. “It was just a dream. It’s not real.” He willed himself to believe this. At least the alarm clock had pulled him out of the hellish pit in his nightmare. There was that to be thankful for.
He tried to ignore his pounding heart and sweaty pajamas. He threw back the blankets. He reached down to his feet and calves where the claws had dug. They hurt, but there was no blood. Gradually the pain subsided. Despite his movement, the overhead lights had not illuminated. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and sat up. The lights didn’t illuminate. He waved his arms over his head. Still the lights did not illuminate.
Now what?
Should I drop?
If he slid off the bed, would his feet land on the cold, hard floor? Or would he fall into the pit?
Am I awake?
He kicked his legs and waved his arms over his head in a wild spasm, trying again to activate the sensor for the lights. He stopped and sat there, in the dark.
Click. The lights lit up.
He was in his room. The floor was below him.
He flopped backward, head on his pillow, and sighed in relief. He pulled the blankets over his head against the strong white lights. It was not going to be a good day.
