General Ramsey held his breath.
Parker had stopped.
He stood near the perimeter of the spotlight. The bright white light contrasted starkly with the surrounding darkness, making Parker appear dark and shadowy in the green night-vision glow. Parker turned and looked up. General Ramsey had the distinct impression the boy was looking back at him. Parker’s eyes gleamed, like an animal at night, prowling in the darkness, its eyes glowing, almost . . . demonic. He stood in the darkness for several long moments. Staring. With those demon eyes.
General Ramsey realized he was holding his breath. Did Parker know he was being watched?
They stared at one another. Parker’s eyes continued to glow green. He stood very still. General Ramsey began to feel uneasy.
Parker looked up, surveying the massive hangar doors, studying them. Could he actually be . . . plotting an escape?
Parker stepped into the spotlight.
